You *are* your business. You’re great at your craft. You could talk about it all day to whoever will listen. The thing is, that approach will only get you so far. Your potential clients really need to hear how you can help them – not what you do. You’re so ingrained in your *what* (because you’re so awesome at it!) that you’re not quite sure how to clearly and succinctly tell them how you help them.
So, how does this show up in your business? You feel nervous about saying your ‘elevator pitch’ at events and you leave without making good connections. You’re talking to someone who seems interested in your work, but you leave the conversation wondering if they actually are. You’ve had some mild success in your business but things are a bit flat right now. You’re doing all the right marketing things but not seeing anything come of it. Does any of this sound like you?
You’ve heard you’ve got 7 seconds to make a first impression, right? The biggest ‘miss’ is having a flat message by saying your occupation or position title.
If you’re feeling frustrated that more people aren’t hiring you – or you’re getting a glazed look when telling people what you do – that means you need a more compelling message. Your message is what starts your movement to make a bigger difference.
Once you have your compelling message, your internal process then carries that prospective client into a relationship with you. The second biggest ‘miss’ by service entrepreneurs is that they don’t create a relationship with their contacts outside their scope of work. You do the work, they leave. Or you tend to give away the store. Or you talk to them once and don’t hear back from them. (do you hear crickets chirping?)
You’re in the course of meeting and talking with people all of the time. You’re likely doing a bunch of the right things. Crafting your compelling message and creating your internal process will help you get better results from what you’re already doing.
